Every dog deserves a loving and comfortable home, but unfortunately, dogs with physical disabilities are often abandoned. Angela Adan, a dedicated animal rescuer from Tehachapi, California, has made it her mission to take in these dogs that others have left behind. While she usually doesn’t get emotional when rescuing strays, there was one small dog that touched her heart and brought tears to her eyes within minutes of meeting.
Angela decided to embark on a four-hour journey in order to locate and rescue a small dog. Upon their reunion, Angela unwrapped the little dog from her cozy blanket, only to feel a sense of dismay. It became evident that this petite chihuahua mix was burdened with a multitude of health issues, including bulging eyes, an excess of teeth, and front legs that were splayed, rendering it extremely challenging for her to move around.
As Angela observed the puppy and gently caressed her frail figure, she was taken aback when the dog immediately tilted her small face up and proceeded to shower Angela’s face with affectionate licks. Realizing that the dog was expressing gratitude for her help and compassion, Angela instantly realized that this particular rescue dog was meant to be a part of her own loving and diverse group of rescued canines at home. Without hesitation, she decided to bring the dog into her care.
“There are these moments when I can feel dogs expressing their gratitude towards me, and this was definitely one of those moments,” Angela remarked. She decided to name the dog Freddie Mercury and wasted no time in showering her with all the love and attention she had been deprived of during the early stages of her life.
Due to her physical limitations, Freddie struggles to walk properly, prompting Angela to playfully refer to her as “T-Rex” when she stands on her hind legs. However, Freddie compensates for her mobility issues by generously doling out affectionate kisses. Despite being fully aware of Freddie’s limited lifespan due to her health complications, Angela remains committed to loving the dog with all her heart, unconditionally. Engaging with these “imperfect” dogs has taught Angela the importance of focusing on what truly matters – gratitude for each and every precious moment life has to offer.
People often ask me for advice on how to care for a special needs dog, especially when the possibility of their passing looms. My answer is simple: dogs teach me to live in the present and have fun. I make a conscious effort to fully enjoy the time I have with them, without worrying about the past or the future. Life is too short to constantly dwell on what has already happened or what is yet to come. Whenever needed, I take breaks and savor the precious moments I have with my furry companions.
There’s one dog in particular who holds a special place in my heart. While all dogs are deserving of love and care, there’s something truly extraordinary about her. The way she looks at me with sheer gratitude is indescribable.
